What Can I Eat After Dental Implant Surgery?

March 28, 2023
What Can I Eat After Dental Implant Surgery?

Dental implants have recently become very popular because they’re far more realistic-looking than dentures and last just as long. After getting dental implants, you’ll have to make some changes to your diet as your body readjusts to the new additions in your mouth. These changes will vary from person to person, depending on your unique situation and needs. Still, there are specific guidelines that everyone can follow when it comes to eating after dental implant surgery. The following is an overview of those rules and guidelines and what you need to know about eating after dental implant surgery.

The First Few Days After Surgery

While eating will take a bit of getting used to after surgery, it's important that you eat once you're hungry. Your gums are likely to be tender and swollen, so you’ll want to stick to liquids or foods that are easy to chew. If you're having trouble chewing, try soft foods like yogurt or pureed soup. Having a straw on hand for drinking liquids and smoothies may be helpful. After a few weeks, you can begin to incorporate more solid foods into your diet, like ground turkey, sweet potatoes, bananas, and edamame.

Soft Foods to Eat After Dental Implants

Soft foods are the best option for the first few days after dental implants. These include mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, cream soups, and yogurt. Avoid hard or crunchy foods such as raw vegetables, potato chips, and granola bars for the first few days following dental implant surgery. While you may be tempted to eat these food items during this time frame, doing so can lead to discomfort and pain.

Foods to Avoid After Dental Implants

  • Avoid eating foods that are difficult to chew, like steak or hard cheese.
  • Avoid crunchy snacks, such as potato chips or nuts.
  • Avoid acidic fruits and vegetables like oranges, lemons, grapefruit, tomatoes, and peppers.

Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help with hydration.

Dental Implants Aftercare

After dental implant surgery, it is important to take good care of the teeth and gums by following post-procedure instructions. Here are some things you need to know about what to eat after dental implant surgery.

  • Brush your teeth twice daily with ADA-approved toothpaste with fluoride.
  • Floss once a day using waxed floss or non-waxed floss, whichever is easier for you.
  • Visit the dentist every six months for checkups to make sure everything is going well.

If you have any questions about what to eat after dental implant surgery, contact a local dentist who can explain the process to you and answer any questions you may have.
